In this 1978 photo taken at the same location as the previous one, a bicyclist is exiting the bridge sidewalk to ride on the wrong side of Massachusetts Avenue. There is no wheelchair curb cut at the far side of the ramp from Storrow Drive. In 1978 as now, bicyclists who had climbed up to the bridge from the Paul Dudley White bicycle path -- by way of stairs, then, rather than a ramp as at present -- and who were riding toward Boston had to use the left sidewalk or else enter Massachusetts Avenue where crossing is difficult. Without a curb cut, bicyclists were more likely to ride against traffic rather than use the sidewalk.
